Cruiser54.com. Go there right meow, and start working through his Tips. It’s a great way to get to know your Jeep. The Pioneer would come with the 4.0/aw4, and NV231 I think. Also a slightly fancier interior IIRC. If it’s got a hitch on it there’s a good chance it came with the towing package and rear Dana44, an ‘87-only option I think.

It looks like it’s got the riveted wheels, which people claim are a rare Comanche Eliminator-only option, but I’ve seen a bunch of XJ’s with them so I’ve started to wonder a little. My XJ’s (‘92 2-dr Sport) wheels are the same but without the rivets.

Ask me questions. I can has some answers.

We’re not doing the trade until Monday, but I’m somewhat nervous about it.

Somewhere between 18 and 21 mpg is about the best you’ll do in my experience. I haven’t had my XJ’s on the road enough to actually figure out mileage, but that’s about where my MJ sits depending on how I drive it. 15-16 around the city. If it’s a five-speed you’ll do a little bit better. If it’s a 2.5L it might do as well as 25 on the highway. Disclaimer: that’s just what I’m told, I’ve never owned a 2.5L.

I don’t know the XJ tank sizes off the top of my head. The MJ came with 16 and 23 gallon, IIRC, and I think the XJ would have similar options. But Google can help you there.

As far as durability goes, they’re pretty well bulletproof. The MJ went to 310,000 miles on the original power train, and the one in it now is at around 150k, my XJ has 200ish.

Check the oil to see if it looks like it’s been changed recently and that there’s good pressure (gauge should be about straight up when driving) actually check that all the fluids look clean. Make sure the 4x4 works if applicable. Common rust points are the footwells and rockers, also around the fenders, and they tend to rust from the inside out. Those are the things I would look at, at least. Definitely drive it.

Parts are available for everything, huge online community with decades of knowledge, and great aftermarket support as well. If the price is right of call it a solid buy, especially if it’s as stock as it looks... Hard to find one that is still completely unmolested.

Vent A pillar window, rear spoiler. Nice color. Does it have rust on rockers?

Is rear axle rounded, oval cover with flat bottomed, or hexagonal in shape?

No major rust, will need new rear bumper and a small patch.

Good stuff. My XJ needs the floors and rockers welded in. I mostly picked it up to practise on before doing my MJ, which looked solid when I bought it but then the bondo fell out of the rockers after a couple hundred miles on gravel. Oops.

XJs are extremely good at hiding rust. My ‘95 looked really good from the outside- straight, shiny paint, and only a small hole in each rocker. the floors, however...

So, make sure to crawl around underneath!
